Fight Hawaii Magazine was a 2008 startup in a local market plagued by the onset of widespread economic slowdowns and the presence of 2 other established pubs already in print and firmly dominating what was left of available advertiser's shrinking budgets. The materials you see here were created for the staff to assist in their early sales efforts. The failure to launch was personally disappointing as this would have represented a rare occasion to just go nuts with edgy, grungy layouts, all peppered with an angry tribal vibe as the mag's art director.

Some 4"x9" Rack Cards (front & back)

In late 2007, I received a call from a friend who had worked with me for a time at Tradewind Graphics. She convinced me to come down to MauiTime Weekly, a local newspaper on Maui, to try out for a freelance gig they had available. From that point, I functioned in a production artist capacity with MauiTime as a freelancer. The only exception was from March 1st to July 28th, 2008, when I functioned as the Art Director. I did A LOT of work during this time, and I'll present probably way too much of it here...some covers, editorial layouts and finally some ads. I returned to my initial capacity as a freelance ad designer, feeling it the best fit for my life & skill set.

Kick Ass Retouching:
The cover above was NOT my design. It was the first cover designed by Brittany, the Art Director who succeeded me. I show it, because I was the one who re-touched the purple sharpie drawing on the model's back until it looked real. I'm quite pleased with the result.

Favorite Music Layout:
Maui is not exactly a hot spot for bands to haul all their gear out to and play a show. Usually, we only get bands either on their way to or from Asia. Luckily, we did get Incubus in 2008 and being a fan, I made sure their editorial got the extra little touches it deserved!

Final Cover:
Brittany had existing tickets home to Florida for Thanksgiving, so I got one last shot at a cover. It might be favorite of all the week's I had the privilege. It was composed from many sources in Photoshop & then digitally painted in Studio Artist 2.0 for Mac OSX.
