The older I get the more I realize that I really only want to work with folks that I share core values with. Of these, I hold both Consideration & Reciprocity to be very near the top of my list of important values. When I'm working on a project for a client, I consider a whole helluva lot of things. I reflect constantly on what may or may not be best for them. This can include everything from budget restraints to graphci file types. Certainly on web projects, there is long consideration regarding SEO concerns. In return, I expect you to fully consider things like the "copy" you will have on each page. Of course, from time to time an unforeseen change in diretion will be required. However, the client who slams out some initial text and then runs me through 16 subsequent alterations of said text is both not considering their own message and certainly is not considering the level of irritation I experience at having to do something umpteen times which could have been reduced to two revision sessions by careful consideration in the first place. It doesn't matter if I'm being paid, it starts to BUG me big time when I find myself spinning my wheels unnecessarlily. Don't let me find myself caring more about your job than you do.
Another big value is reciprocity. Basically, this just means that you work as hard for my benefit as I do for yours. The biggest area connected to this for me is PAYDAY. If I've just busted my ass non-stop for you to get a website up under some insane deadline, then don't be taking weeks and weeks to cut me my balance check...get it done that same week! I've worked super fast for you, so pay me right away as well. I'm a freelancer, cashflow is important. Clients who exhibit these values find their projects always near the top of my 'to do' list. Those who don't, find me consistently "too busy" to take on their job right now! See how this works?
I scratch your back, you scratch mine or the scratching soon stops altogether. Make sense?
