- Have I decided on and purchased a domain name (URL) - I recommend GoDaddy.com
- Do I know what I want my site to accomplish in an easily stated, measurable and realistic timeline? For example, "I want my site to make available for sale an E-book I've created and I want it LIVE by April 1st, and positioned on the first page of Google under these 3 search strings within 6 months of launch."
- Have I considered HOSTING solutions and am I prepared to pull the trigger on securing hosting for the site?
- Do I have a page by page plan for the content of the site?
- Have I completed and extensively proofed my written content for each and every page?
- Have I located specific examples available online which show my designer both the LOOK and the functionality of certain things I want on my own site?
- If I need to sell a product online, have I spoken with my bank regarding online merchant accounts, and am I prepared for the possibility that this process can in certain cases delay the launch of a site significantly.
- Do I know the Search Strings that I am desiring to be found online under?
- Am I expecting to be able to maintain my site independently of my designer once the site is launched?
- Have I budgeted enough to accomplish what I'm imagining and relatedly, have I looked at multiple design resources?
If you're unable to answer these questions or answered 'no' to the ones where the logical right answer is 'yes', then in my opinion, it's unwise for you to begin the design and construction phase of your website. Doing so will drive the final cost of your site unnecessarily upward, at least if you hire me, it will.
